People should drive as carefully as possible in order to preserve their no claims bonus, according to one car insurance expert.
Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, explained that as the car insurance bonus can be lost even if someone has an accident that is not their fault, people should be extra careful.
She said: "Avoid accidents as much as possible, always observe the Highway Code, drive carefully and observe the rules of the road."
People can sometimes pay extra to protect their no claims bonus if they do have to use their car insurance, but this can be invalidated if they have another accident shortly after the first one, she warned.
As it can take up to five years to build up the full car insurance discount, people are understandably keen to protect it, Ms Connor stated.
Yesterday, the Daily Mirror warned that people who switch to third-party car insurance face greater risks as if they are involved in a hit-and-run collision they will have to pay for the repairs to their vehicle out of their own pocket.
