Holiday drivers warned over car insurance

Tue, 13 May 2008

Eight million British drivers are expected to head for Europe on holiday this summer, but they must make sure that they check their car insurance before doing so, one expert has warned.

Erik Nelson, spokesperson for Norwich Union, explained that having comprehensive car insurance in the UK does not always mean that people will be covered abroad.

He said: "It's important to understand that fully comprehensive motor insurance in the UK does not automatically mean the same level of cover abroad and so we urge people to contact their insurer to assess their level of cover abroad and decide whether to upgrade their policy prior to their trip ."

People should also check their car insurance policy to see what the limit is on cover for personal belongings, he added.

Drivers should all carry a copy of their car insurance certificate with them while they are travelling, Mr Nelson concluded.

Yesterday, young drivers were warned that taking the Pass Plus course will not necessarily save them money on their car insurance.
