Anyone who opts for a greener car will save money on fuel and their car insurance, one expert has claimed.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for the British Insurance Brokers' Association, explained that as such cars tend to be in lower price groups, people who buy one could make a saving.
He said: "Road tax is priced according to your emissions as well, so there are financial benefits to driving greener vehicles, both in tax and insurance."
Mr Trudgill added that such car insurance savings might appeal to those who are looking to tighten their belts in the wake of the credit crunch.
However, many factors go towards deciding the cost of car insurance so people might want to shop around before committing to a deal.
Yesterday, Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert.com, claimed that car insurance premiums could be set to rise by ten per cent this year, something he said should encourage people to look for a better deal.
