Drivers to revert to bad habits

Thu, 22 May 2008

As millions of people prepare to embark upon road journeys this bank holiday weekend, many are expected demonstrate "anti-social driving" tendencies.

According to car insurance provider insurance.co.uk, 4.5 million of the 18 million British motorists set to take to the roads this weekend are likely to "abandon everyday driving sensibilities".

The company claimed that 26 per cent of these motorists will use their hand-held mobile phone while behind the wheel, while 20 per cent will drive without their seat belt.

Steve Grainger, head of insurance.co.uk, said: "Anti-social driving is becoming an ever increasing phenomenon and is a growing concern of regional police forces and local councils."

However, drivers committing such offences can face points on their license and higher insurance premiums, with more serious crimes – such as drink driving – punishable by a large fine or prison.

Earlier this week, esure estimated that 5.6 million motorists taking to the roads this weekend will face an average delay of 45 minutes.
