According to one car insurance provider, 14.6 million people will be aiming to get away this bank holiday weekend.
However, esure estimated that some eight million people will experience delays while travelling, of which 5.6 million will be held up for an average of 45 minutes.
Some motorists are aiming to beat the traffic, with 53 per cent planning to make use of minor roads in order to sidestep motorway congestion and 25 per cent may travel by train.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said that motorists embarking on bank holiday journeys should ensure that they and their passengers are prepared.
"Drivers should check their vehicle before setting off, fill up with fuel and meticulously plan their routes with plenty of contingencies - taking along water, food, a map and a mobile phone at the very least," he advised.
Car insurance provider Confused.com recently noted that one in three Brits choose to holiday in the UK more than once a year on average.
