Providing a firm with false details in order to get a cheaper car insurance policy is a "false economy", one expert has warned.
Hayley Parsons, managing director of Gocompare.com explained that anyone who engaged in such practices risks invalidating their car insurance and could even find it more difficult to get cover .
She said: "Insurance represents a significant part of the cost of running a car these days, so everyone is looking for savings .
"It might be tempting to alter certain details or omit key information if you think it’ll help you get a better deal, but this could result in your policy being invalidated if you are found out."
Ms Parsons added that the best way to save money on your car insurance is by shopping around when it comes up for renewal.
She claimed that people could be throwing away hundreds of pounds by not looking for the best car insurance deal each year.
Last week, Will Thomas of Confused.com warned that anyone who adds modifications such as spoilers or alloy wheels to their vehicle will face a higher bill for their car insurance.
He added that anyone who did make modifications to their vehicle should inform their car insurance provider as they might render their policy void.
