British motorists could risk ruining their holiday if they do not check their car insurance cover before they drive abroad, one expert has warned.
Figures released by uSwitch.com reveal that 17.2 million drivers are unaware of the level of car insurance cover they have when travelling overseas .
This means that anyone going on a driving holiday could be left out of pocket if they have to make a claim on their car insurance.
Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com explained that drivers should not assume their car insurance policy will automatically cover them outside the UK.
He said: "It isn't only sun cream protection that holidaymakers need to worry about when driving abroad this year - motorists must also spend some time examining the protection offered by their car insurance provider ."
Mr Berkhauer added that people should be aware of any restrictive clauses included in their policy.
On Monday, Sainsbury's finance revealed that 15 per cent of people it surveyed admitted to giving out false information when applying for car insurance .
