Richard Mason, director of insurance for Moneysupermarket.com, explained that while some car insurance firms take in to account the no-claims history of a driver, others did not.
He said: "If you are thinking of having more than one car in your household, it is prudent to choose an insurer that allows you to make the most of your no-claims discount . Hopefully all insurers will soon follow suit on this.
"Motorists with more than one vehicle should be aware of insurers such as Swiftcover and Virgin that do allow you to fully benefit from your safe driving record."
Earlier this month, a survey by Sainsbury's finance found that 15 per cent of people admitted to providing false details when applying for car insurance .
