Those looking to keep their car insurance premiums at a minimum would be well advised to avoid getting caught in a speed trap, drivers have been warned.
Yes Insurance reports that, according to the Department for Transport (DfT), speed cameras netted more than £100 million during 2006-07.
It adds that those who are photographed breaking the speed limit by such a device will not only face a fine, but also a possible motoring conviction which can lead to an increase in the cost of their car insurance premium .
However, for drivers who do not exceed the limit, speed cameras may reduce the chance of them having to make a claim on their car insurance policy .
A DfT spokesperson said: "Independent research has shown there are 1,745 fewer deaths and serious injuries at camera sites each year."
On Monday, a survey by Sainsbury's Bank found that 15 per cent of respondents admitted to giving false information when apply for car insurance.
