More needs to be done to encourage drivers to switch to more environmentally-friendly vehicles, one car insurance firm has said.
According to research conducted by car insurance company Swiftcover.com, found that 47 per cent of people are put off buying "greener" vehicles because of the limited choice available.
A further 23 per cent of respondents thought the government should put pressure on manufacturers to develop more environmentally-friendly cars .
Craig Staniland, underwriting director of swiftcover.com, said: "While environmentally-friendly and alternative fuel cars are the future, British drivers have yet to fully embrace green motoring .
"As a car insurance company, we incentivise drivers of hybrid cars with a ten per cent discount; however, more is needed to help drivers make the transition."
Yesterday, a study carried out by Ipsos Mori found that Moneysupermarket.com is the price comparison website most likely to offer drivers the lowest car insurance premiums .
