Collisions with deer are responsible for millions of pounds worth of car insurance claims a year, figures indicate.
According to the Post Office the animals cause an estimated £17 million worth of damage to vehicles every year, sparking a large number of car insurance claims .
Other animals also pose a risk to drivers with the company claiming that this time of year is a peak period for such accidents .
Richard Pennant-Jones, Post Office head of motor insurance, said: "Drivers are often unsure about what they should do if they hit an animal on the road, especially as motor insurance companies do not require policyholders to report accidents involving wild animals."
However, he said Post Office Car Insurance wanted people to report such accidents so steps could be taken to help reduce the level of these incidents.
In related news, Which? yesterday warned that people should check the small print on their car insurance policy as many so-called comprehensive policies did not cover some major items.
