With the rising cost of fuel, car insurance and tax, motorists are expected to pay more than £3,800 a year to run their vehicles in 2009, new research has suggested.
According to uSwitch.com, motorists in the UK are currently paying an average of £65 to fill their fuel tanks, meaning drivers could have to collectively spend £104 billion a year on fuel in 2009.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said motorists could soon be "priced off the roads" as insurance premiums and road tax also increase.
She commented: "As a direct result of these price hikes, motorists are going to be forced to think carefully about when, where or even if they use their cars . For some there are other options such as public transport, but many do not have a choice."
In order to improve fuel efficiency, the company urged motorists to use their gears "wisely" and to "drive smoothly".
In related news, the Press Association reports that the Federation of Small Business has suggested a number of businesses are concerned that the rising cost of fuel will limit their ability to expand.
