People should "never assume" that their car insurance policy will cover them for driving abroad, one expert has claimed.
Speaking to the Independent, Peter Gerrard, head of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, explained that not all policies offer the same level of cover overseas as they do at home.
He said: "Always check your policy. It's very easy to think that because you have paid your premium, your insurance will be valid overseas."
People who rent a vehicle might also want to examine the details of the car insurance policy that comes with the deal, he added.
He suggests that some individuals might want to buy an excess waiver policy, which means they will not face an excess if they are forced to claim on the rental car insurance.
In related news, swiftcover.com recently announced that is has started offering car insurance quotes via mobile phone internet connections.
This make it even easier for people to compare car insurance deals, the firm claims.
