People who do not inform their car insurance firm before they travel abroad could find their comprehensive policy is reduced to third party only .
Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's Car Insurance manager, explained that people who do not do this risk having to foot a hefty bill.
She said: "Having an accident anywhere is bad enough but when abroad it can be compounded by a lack of local knowledge, to then find that the other party's damage is covered but not your own, is surely a blow worth avoiding."
Because of this, people should double check their car insurance details before setting off, she added.
Drivers should also take the time to make sure they are aware of the differences in the rules of the road, she stated.
Last week, Gocompare.com claimed that by shopping around for their car insurance drivers can help off-set the cost of the increase in the price of petrol .
