People who are driving abroad this summer must make sure that they are covered by their car insurance, one expert has claimed.
Janet Conner, managing director of over 50s insurance specialist RIAS, explained that not all policies cover overseas trips as standard.
This could leave people out of pocket if they have an accident that their car insurance does not cover, she warned.
Ms Conner said: "Before you take your car across the channel, make sure all your paperwork is in order.
"Getting the correct insurance in place should be as essential a part of a pre-holiday to-do list as remembering to pack your toothbrush."
People should also make sure that they take their certificate of car insurance with them when they go travelling, she added.
Yesterday, Peter Gerrard, head of research at moneysupermarket.com, stated that cheap car insurance can still offer a good level of cover, but people must check the small print before they commit to a deal.
