Drivers could face increased car insurance premiums because of a poor knowledge of the Highway Code, it has been claimed.
Research by price comparison website uSwitch.com has found that just one per cent of people were able to answer all the questions it posed on the subject, with 34 per cent of people scoring less than half.
Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at the firm, explained that not knowing the Highway Code could make drivers more likely to become involved in an accident.
This in turn will lead to an increase in the amount they have to pay for their car insurance, he stated.
Mr Berkhauer suggested that tougher driving tests could help solve the problem.
"This could lead to fewer accidents, safer roads and lower insurance premiums for all, allowing consumers to save money at a time when it is hard to come by," he said.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers Association, suggested that people should go through an intermediary when taking out car insurance as doing so will help them get the most suitable deal.
