'Vehicle overcrowding' could mean that people are priced out of the car insurance market, one firm has warned.
Research by Accident Exchange reveals that 700,000 people each year hit a parked vehicle, leaving the victim to claim on their car insurance .
This means that they have to foot a £1.25 billion repair bill, the company found.
Steve Evans, chief executive of the firm, is certain the situation is only going to get worse.
He said: "The number of vehicles on Britain's roads has swelled by almost ten million over the past decade, leaving 35 million motorists competing for an estimated 2.2 million car park spaces today."
This could lead to a situation where parked car-related incidents become so common that people living in the area are "priced out" of the car insurance market, he added.
Yesterday, research by Direct Line Car Insurance found that there has been a 30 per cent increase in the number of people who have had their vehicles damaged by vandals since 2006.
