Car insurance warning over eyesight

Mon, 14 Jul 2008

Anyone with poor eyesight risks invalidating their car insurance policy, one expert has warned.

Research by Specsavers found that one-in-four people cannot read a vehicle's number plate from 20.5 metres, meaning any car insurance claim they make after an accident might not be successful, reports the Scotsman.

Shirley-Ann Kennedy, chair of the firm in Scotland, said: "Many drivers still don't realise that if they can't read a number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres or five car lengths in good light, they are committing an offence which may invalidate their car insurance."

The research was conducted by opticians at this year's Royal Highland show and covered 160 motorists.

Last week, Simon Lamble, product director at Confused.com, warned that people who commit speeding offences and end up with a large number of points on their licence face the prospect of higher car insurance premiums as they will be viewed as a greater risk.
