People who drive a Ford Fiesta or Volkswagen Golf and live in London or the Midlands are most likely to be the victim of vehicle-related theft, research by one car insurance firm shows.
Swiftcover.com compiled the information from its car insurance claims database from April 2007-08 and the statistics include actual or attempted theft of the vehicle itself and personal belongings.
The survey also found that less than half of victims ever see their car or belongings again and of those who do 48 per cent find the items have suffered some sort of damage.
According to the car insurance firm this underlines the importance of taking proper security measures.
Robin Reames, claims director of Swiftcover.com, said: "It's amazing how many people leave their keys in the ignition whilst de-frosting the car, or pop into the post office leaving their car windows open. It's just an open invitation to opportunistic thieves."
People should always secure their vehicle no matter what the circumstances, the car insurance expert added.
Yesterday, a study by uSwitch.com revealed that young drivers pay 115 per cent more for their car insurance than older people.
