Young drivers pay double for car insurance, research shows

Wed, 02 Jul 2008

Young drivers are paying more than twice than other motorists for their car insurance, new research shows.

The study, by uSwitch.com, reveals that drivers aged 17-25 pay an average 115 per cent more for their car insurance.

According to the research the average car insurance premium for this age group is £989, compared to £459 for customers as a whole.

Commenting on the figures, Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, explained that the proposed equalities bill is unlikely to bring an end to this situation as younger drivers tend to be riskier prospects.

He said: "Whether the equalities bill impacts young driver premiums or not, the most important thing is to research the cost of insurance before you buy a car ."

Mr Berkhauer recommended people shop around to find the best car insurance deal they can.

Yesterday, confused.com revealed that people with points on their driving licence can pay up to 60 per cent more than careful drivers.
