UK drivers could save a total of £1.9 million a year by shopping around for their car insurance, it has been claimed.
Research by Swiftcover.com found that a 25-year-old woman buying a new Peugeot 207 could save more than £300 by opting for the cheapest available car insurance policy .
Tina Shortle, marketing director of Swiftcover.com, said: "With household bills rising ever higher, it seems crazy that UK consumers should willingly waste over £1.9 billion by sticking with the same old insurer year after year. Smart consumers know that an online insurance company is likely to be cheaper."
She also offered other ways people can lower their car insurance premiums .
Ms Shortle suggested that people could opt for a car in a lower insurance group, driver a smaller car or add their spouse to their policy.
On Tuesday, a study by Sainsbury's Car Insurance found that premiums rose by an average of five per cent last year.
