Many motorists prefer 4x4s

A significant number of people are looking to purchase a 4x4 this year rather than a more fuel-efficient car, it has been claimed.

Research by Direct Line Car Insurance revealed that 1.2 million motorists plan to buy a 4x4 vehicle at some point this year.

Motorists were found to be four times more likely to invest in a less fuel-efficient car than one of the more environmentally-friendly models available on the market.

Tony Chilcott, head of car insurance at Direct Line, said: "Choosing a more fuel efficient car can limit further damage to the environment, as well as provide financial benefits."

With most drivers looking to reduce costs, purchasing a new car may be a good opportunity to switch car insurance or amend existing policies.

Earlier this week, Swiftcover.com reported that the country's 34 million car drivers could potentially save £1.9 billion a year on annual car insurance by shopping around for better deals.

Tina Shortle, marketing director of the firm, said that "smart" consumers know that an online car insurance company ought to offer more competitive quotes .
