Anyone driving abroad needs to check if they are covered by their car insurance policy before they set off, one industry body has said.
Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers, said that while anyone travelling in the EU would be covered by their car insurance policy it might be at a reduced level.
He said that people with comprehensive car insurance who travelled to France, Germany or Holland would only be insured up to the minimum legal requirement for the individual country.
"That doesn't necessarily mean you'd be covered if your vehicle is stolen, if it's broken into or if it's damaged in an accident," Mr Tarling warned.
For this reason he advised that people should check to see what cover their car insurance would provide and then buy an extension to the policy if needed.
According to research carried out by Zurich, 28 per cent of British motorists do not check their car insurance policy to see if it is valid before driving abroad.
