Those planning long journeys should consider taking out roadside assistance cover on top of their car insurance, according to one expert.
Speaking to the Observer, Will Thomas, head of car insurance at Confused.com, explained that although it means making an extra payment, it is still essential.
"Some people think just because they are insured, they are automatically covered, but that's a serious misconception," he said.
People can get cover from as little as £20 and it will bring peace of mind, the car insurance expert added.
Hayley Parsons, managing director of GoCompare.com, stated that people should not assume their car insurance firm will give them a cheap quote for breakdown cover and for this reason it is best to shop around.
Last well, Direct Line Insurance warned drivers to make sure their vehicle is roadworthy.
If they do not, then they run the risk of invalidating their car insurance the firm stated.
