Car insurance customers are being warned against the dangers of drink driving this summer .
According to uSwitch, 5.6 million drivers in the UK consider driving after drinking, even though they are unsure about whether they are legally safe to do so.
However, the switching service has warned that their car insurance premiums could soar by 63 per cent on average - the equivalent of £334.06 - if they are convicted of a drink driving offence .
Motorists also need to consider their speed during the summer, as uSwitch reveals that a conviction for speeding can increase car insurance premiums by eight per cent for the first offence.
"Over 11 million motorists may be taking a gamble with their lives by remaining in a state of denial regarding the affect even a small amount of alcohol has on their ability to drive safely," Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, warned.
He added that drink driving convictions remain on a driving licence for 11 years and that the best way avoid a hike in car insurance premiums is to be responsible driver.
Sheilas' Wheels recently reported that female drivers could be putting themselves and others at risk by not wearing their glasses while on the roads.
