People who are convicted of a drink driving offence will see their car insurance premium increase dramatically, according to one expert.
Erik Nelson, a spokesperson for Norwich Union, explained that those who commit such a crime will be viewed as a higher risk by car insurance firms .
However, if people try to avoid an increased premium by not disclosing the conviction when applying for car insurance, they face another problem, Mr Nelson warned.
"If a motorist fails to declare their convictions they risk their motor insurance policy becoming void in the event of a claim," he said.
People should make sure that they are honest with their car insurance firm, he added.
Yesterday, Peter Gerrard, head of insurance at Moneysupermarket.com, warned that drivers heading overseas could find that their car insurance policy does not offer fully comprehensive cover for their trip.
He explained that many car insurance policies revert to third-party only cover when a vehicle is taken abroad.
