The increasing cost of motoring - including high car insurance premiums - is hitting drivers hard, new research shows.
Research by MoneyExpert.com found that 76 per cent of people blame rising petrol prices for driving less, while eight per cent put it down to the cost of car insurance .
Sean Gardener of MoneyExpert.com explained that while there is little people can do about fuel prices, they can tackle the issue of car insurance .
He said: " Petrol costs are high but the single biggest outlay a driver has to account for is their insurance premium. And as it's illegal to drive without it the only way to minimise the damage is to shop 'til you drop and get the best possible car insurance deal you can find."
Mr Gardner added that almost six million people have switched car insurance deals in the last six months.
Yesterday, uSwitch.com warned that people should avoid taking out car insurance offered when they purchase a new vehicle as this is usually more expensive.
