Genetics could be to blame for high accident rates among young male drivers, research by one car insurance firm has found.
According to a "major academic review" published by insurance firm esure, aggressive, risk-taking behaviour that helped our ancestors pass on their genes still influences the way that some young men drive.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure car insurance, said: "There has been very little broad thinking about why young men suffer so much worse accident and conviction rates on British roads."
He added that there needed to be a greater study of such issues by policymakers if they are to successfully reduce the accidents and convictions which can lead to increased car insurance premiums .
Yesterday, a survey by insurance.co.uk revealed that 26 per cent of people admitted lying on their car insurance application, which could render their policy invalid.
It also found that 44 per cent of people think that car insurance fraud is a relatively minor crime .
