The government should encourage rather than coerce drivers in taking out so-called green car insurance, one expert has claimed.
Nick Dear, external communications consultant at More Than car insurance, explained that as such policies tend be offered on green vehicles, people will first need to be convinced to switch to them.
He said: "Hopefully educating and encouraging people to drive in more environmentally friendly ways will be enough to get them to switch, rather than through coercion."
Mr Dear added that that people who were already driving a hybrid car could save around 13 per cent on their annual premium by switching to an eco-friendly car insurance policy .
A total of 58 per cent of drivers said they would consider switching to a hybrid car if they could benefit of from cheaper car insurance, he concluded.
Last week, Tescocompare.com warned people to check the small print on their car insurance to make sure that they had the level of cover they need.
