People face an increased risk of having to claim on their car insurance if they park their vehicle on a residential street, figures show.
Research conducted by the AA found that 43 per cent of people have, or know someone who has, had their vehicles vandalised while they have been parked on a residential street, meaning that they might have to claim on their car insurance to pay for repairs.
Mark Huggins, head of AA Personal Loans said: "Although it's not always possible to park off road at home, try to park in a well-lit spot and take simple precautions like folding in the side mirrors to reduce the risk of them being knocked off.
"It's also worth investing in a visible theft deterrent such as a steering wheel clamp."
He added that people who leave their vehicle in a locked garage overnight can make a significant saving on the amount they pay for car insurance.
Last week, thisismoney.co.uk reported that car insurance firms are set to treat convictions for using a mobile phone while driving in the same manner they do speeding offences.
