Drivers who are convicted of using their mobile phone while driving could see their car insurance premiums increase by a third, it has been claimed.
Allianz Insurance has announced it is to upgrade the seriousness with which it views such offences, the first car insurance firm to do so, thisismoney.co.uk reports.
Speaking to the website, Neil Walker, motor manager for the car insurance firm, said; "If you are convicted of using a mobile phone while driving not only do you face a fine and points on your licence, you will also suffer the added financial burden of increased car insurance."
He added that he expects other car insurance firms to follow suit in the near future.
Anyone convicted of using their mobile while driving will receive a fine of £60 and have three points placed on their licence, something which could make it harder to switch car insurance providers in future.
Last week, Paul Baxter of Tescocompare.com warned people should make sure that they take out a car insurance policy which covers all their needs.
