Anyone who decides to take a driving holiday in Europe this summer should check their car insurance before they set off, one expert has warned.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, explained that many car insurance policies do not offer full cover when people take their vehicle overseas.
He said: "If you normally have comprehensive car insurance, it will come as a shock if you are with one of those insurers who will downgrade your cover for driving in Europe.
"While it may be in the small print of your policy, our research shows many motorists are unaware of this."
The fact that the car insurance will be downgraded to third party means that the driver will be left to foot the bill if there is any damage to their own vehicle, he added.
People who regularly take their car in Europe should look at getting an insurance policy that provides full cover across the EU, he concluded.
Last week, writing for fool.co.uk, Cliff D'Arcy advised people to switch car insurance providers as this should get them a better deal.
