A "boy racer" mentality exists among male drivers in the UK and this helps push up their car insurance premiums, it has been claimed.
Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com explained that men are more likely to be convicted of a driving offence which also helps boost the cost of their car insurance even further.
She said: "Men's insurance, especially when they first pass their driving tests, has historically always been higher than that of their female counterparts – a fact which highlights the ‘boy racer’ mentality which still exists in Britain."
Ms Williams added that recent research by the firm has shown that men are more than twice as likely as women to be convicted of crimes such as speeding, something which could increase the amount they pay for car insurance.
A study by the company found that 2.3 million men were convicted for driving offence in 2007, compared to 920,000.
