Anyone who buys a new vehicle and opts for an 'on the spot' car insurance policy offered by the manufacturer could end up paying over the odds, one expert has warned.
uSwitch.com's insurance expert, Ashton Berkhauer, explained that by taking out such a car insurance policy drivers will, on average, end up forking out an extra £93 compared to those who take the time to shop around.
He said: "Motorists simply need to shop around to make sure they pay the lowest price for the level of cover they need.
"Insurance through the manufacturer rarely comes with any extra benefits, just an extra cost unless it's completely free."
However, Mr Berkhauer warned that even if the car insurance cover is free, then people will still have to check the small print to make sure that the policy is suitable for their needs and does not have a unreasonable excess.
Yesterday, a poll by Moneysupermarket.com found that consumers believe the Post Office is the top car insurance firm .
