Hundreds of thousand of British motorists are risking massive fines by driving without car insurance, new research shows.
The study, undertaken by MoneyExpert.com found that nearly 350,000 people have driven a vehicle without car insurance in the last year.
Young people are the worst offenders, with 120,000 people aged between 18 and 24 admitting to driving without car insurance.
Sean Gardner of MoneyExpert.com said: "It's a real worry that many people persist in driving without insurance . They are putting the personal and financial security of others at risk.
"Insurance premiums have not risen to such a degree that cost can be the only excuse."
He added that there are many ways to get cheap car insurance, but despite the cost uninsured drivers should never get behind the wheel as it is illegal.
Earlier this week, research by insurance.co.uk found that 26 per cent of people had lied when applying for their car insurance, something which could invalidate their policy.
