Foreign nationals from eastern Europe are jeopardising their car insurance policies due to careless attitude towards drink-driving, it has been suggested.
According to Chief Inspector Rick Dowell of Dorset Police, fatal or serious injury traffic accidents involving immigrants has increased in recent years, the Daily Mail reports.
Chief Inspector Dowell attributes this rise to differing attitudes to the offence of drink-driving across Europe, combined with poor education on the dangers of the problem.
"In eastern European countries, especially the Baltic states, the drink driving legislation isn't as enforced as rigorously as in this country and perhaps they don't appreciate the dangers of it," he comments to the news source.
He adds that Latvia, Poland, Estonia and Lithuania have high fatality rates on the roads.
Drivers involved in an accident or convicted of dangerous driving could see their car insurance premiums affected.
Research released yesterday by Sainsbury's Car Insurance showed that the average driver has seen their car insurance increase by 5.25 per cent from last year.
