Motorists venturing to France to enjoy the sights and sounds of the country and perhaps even some world cup rugby action should check their car insurance before crossing the channel, an expert has warned.
A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) commented that drivers must be prudent before they travel abroad and check their car insurance .
"Check your insurance to see whether or not the level of your UK cover extends to cover you in France," he said.
Drivers who do not tell their insurer that they will be driving to France are not breaking the law, the spokesperson remarked.
However, drivers who do this may not be covered for theft or an accident, as the cover will only extend to what the legal minimum is in France.
Some car insurance companies may give full cover, while others will only insure the driver for a month abroad, he added.
A recent survey by YouGov and swiftcover.com found that out of nearly 2,400 people questioned, 37 per cent has experienced a theft while in Spain .
