Some older drivers are afraid of setting wheel on the motorway, a new study has revealed.
According to data collated by Age Concern Exeter and published in the Exmouth Journal, 30 per cent of car insurance customers over the age of 50 in the area do not like travelling on these major roads.
Although if one crashes on the motorway then life and limb is risked - or at least a hefty car insurance bill - those surveyed cited reasons such as fears of long traffic jams as their deterrents.
In addition, the prospect of being stuck with a breakdown on the hard shoulder was also found to make some older drivers turn a cold shoulder.
Karen Trist, from Age Concern Exeter, said: "Motorways are statistically safer places to drive than other roads, but it's understandable that many older people in Exeter are wary of breaking down and being stranded by the side of a motorway."
She added that a good breakdown cover policy may help to calm some fears. Many car insurance policies come with breakdown cover as standard.
The government recently considered introducing retesting for older drivers.
