London and north-west worst for car insurance, study shows

Wed, 17 Oct 2007

Britons living in London and the north-west are likely to get "hammered" when it comes to taking out car insurance policies, a new study has found.

Data collated by online price comparison site moneysupermarket.com found that some areas of the UK will see higher quotes than others, with Scots and particularly those in Dundee getting the best deals.

The highest quote for car insurance cover on a Ford Focus was in east London, followed by Bolton, Liverpool, south-east London and Manchester .

Oldham and Wigan came after, with other big cities such as Birmingham, Leeds and Bradford making up the top ten.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Car insurers look at the rate of car crime, the type of car you drive, your age and whether your area has drivers classed as high-risk or particularly prone to accidents ."

A recent report in the Exmouth Journal based on data from Age Concern Exeter found that a large number of older drivers are frightened of the motorway, or unwilling to drive on these major roads.
