Crackdown on speeders

Tue, 02 Oct 2007

Moves are afoot in Yorkshire which could see thousands of motorists saving money on their car insurance policies by staying within the law.

More than 2,500 letters have been sent out by police as they seek to reduce the number of speeding incidents on local roads, although 121 drivers have been caught flouting speed laws, the Doncaster Free Press reports.

Breaking the speed limit is likely to result in points on one's licence, something that could cause car insurance companies to view drivers as a higher risk and therefore raise premiums.

Furthermore, motorists could face a ban if they amass too many points.

Mayor Martin Winter, who is also chair of the Safer Doncaster Partnership, told the publication that crackdowns of this nature help to instil the idea of "zero tolerance" on crime.

"These results are really excellent and show how we are committed to working together to make our neighbourhoods safer," he added.

The Safer Doncaster Partnership also advises people on techniques to avoid becoming the victim of vehicle crime - another act that can have complications to a car insurance policy .
