Drivers have been advised to prepare for darker nights and the onset of winter to ensure they remain safe.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said that as nights begin to draw in there tends to be an "uplift" in the rate of accidents occurring on the country's roads.
Government figures show that the road casualty rate was 29 per cent higher in December last year than it was in April.
"Motorists should ready themselves and their vehicles now for the seasonal changes. Drivers should also be extra vigilant, and prepared for the potential actions of less responsible road users," he advised.
Drivers should also think about adding roadside assistance to their car insurance policies, Mr Mason added.
Meanwhile, car insurance provider Confused.com recently warned that government proposals to double the fixed-penalty for speeders could see many people pay more for their car insurance cover.
