A new study has suggested that car insurance policyholders would support tougher penalties for motorists who take to the roads without valid car insurance cover.
In a survey from car insurance providers American Express Motor Insurance, 10,000 people were asked what one measure they would like to see introduced in order to improve driving standards.
The top answer was boosting police patrols, while improving public transport came second in the poll and increasing punitive measures for drivers without vehicle tax or car insurance came third.
Underlining the scale of the problem of car insurance evasion, the car insurance company has pointed to research from the Association of British Insurers, which indicates that every motorist must pay an extra £25 to £30 for car insurance cover because of uninsured road users.
"The uninsured driver poses a risk to every insured driver - not only is there the extra premium cost but there is the risk of being involved in an accident with them," affirmed Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Motor Insurance.
As many motorists may already be aware, it is illegal to drive on UK roads without a minimum of third party car insurance cover.
