It is advisable for motorists to check the terms of their car insurance contract for international breakdown cover before setting off on holiday, according to a financing website.
A new study from Find.co.uk has revealed that the "vast majority" of car insurance providers do not offer European breakdown protection as standard - instead insisting that policyholders stipulate it as an option when arranging a deal.
Moreover, car insurance customers who are confident they possess overseas car insurance protection may need to contact their provider to notify them of their travel intentions, the financing portal warns.
Kate Marsden, marketing director at Find.co.uk, underlined the message for car insurance customers.
"Whatever your overseas motoring plans this summer, make sure your are covered for all the countries you intend to visit and against the eventuality of a breakdown," she said.
Some comprehensive car insurance providers offer UK breakdown cover as standard.
Depending upon the premium paid, motorists who break down may be entitled to request that they are driven on to their original destination or given a courtesy car while vehicle repairs are undertaken.
