Britons who are planning to travel overseas during the holidays have been told to remember the importance of arranging breakdown cover in addition to their standard motor insurance package.
Some 3.1 million Brits will be flooding across the English Channel this year for a holiday on the continent, according to statistics cited by financial services provider American Express Insurance Services.
And many of these may not yet have checked that their motor insurance policy includes breakdown assistance if the worst should happen and their car stops working.
Underlining the scale of the problem, American Express' car insurance division's marketing manager Joanne Field said that 11 per cent of holidaymakers have broken down while in a foreign country.
"Breaking down is never a pleasant experience, let alone when abroad," she said.
"I would recommend that anyone driving on the continent checks their breakdown policy to ensure they are covered."

According to its research, almost a quarter of people who have been involved in a road safety incident say they have encountered problems close to their own homes.
