Car insurance sector on alert after vehicle buyers go green

Wed, 21 Mar 2007

There may be an increased demand for eco-friendly car insurance deals over the next year, if the findings of a new car buying study are to be believed.

In a survey by financial services provider AA Personal Loans, one in five people planning to make a new car purchase in the next 12 months revealed that they are intending to purchase a green vehicle.

To put this into context, approximately one in 17 people intended to purchase an eco-friendly motor in February 2006.

Commenting on the findings, Lloyd East, director of AA Personal Loans, stressed that green issues were becoming important to an increasing number of motorists.

"The rapid growth of the green agenda among car buyers over the last year is very significant," he said.

"The environmental agenda is being driven into the heart of the motor industry."

A number of car insurance companies now offer discounts for green vehicles.

For instance, Co-operative Insurance offers insurance premium discounts for low-emissions vehicles, as well as offsetting 20 per cent of CO2 emissions from every insured car.
