Car insurance study highlights danger of fatigue

Mon, 11 Jun 2007

Car insurance customers have been reminded about the importance of ensuring they are rested before taking the wheel following the publication of a new insurance study.

According to research from motor insurance specialist esure, approximately eight per cent of car insurance policyholders admit they have fallen asleep behind the wheel at some point in the past.

In order to combat the effects of fatigue, motorists have adopted a wide variety of solutions, the car insurance provider's results indicate.

Specifically, 81 per cent opened their windows when they felt sleepy, while six per cent opted for slapping themselves across the face.

"No-one should have to resort to extreme measures such as slapping themselves across the face to stay awake behind the wheel," commented Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at the car insurance company.

"Never start a long journey tired, always take plenty of breaks and get a good night's sleep."

Under UK law, it is illegal to drive without a minimum of third party car insurance cover.

However, motor insurance customers who have recently been involved in a crash due to tiredness could potentially find it difficult to locate a cheap car insurance quote.
