A new financing study has given car insurance policyholders an insight into what is the real cost of picking up a speeding ticket.
According to figures from online motor insurance specialist esure, car insurance customers who are flashed by speed cameras collectively paid out £114.6 million on fixed-penalty notices in 2006.
However, the financial services provider has pointed out that many motorists may have failed to factor in the added expense of an increased car insurance quote.
It has estimated that motorists caught speeding had to pay out approximately £30 million as a result of higher car insurance premiums.
"Motorists are not only forking out more than ever before in speeding fines but are also fiscally penalised twice through increased car insurance premiums following a conviction," remarked Andrew Blowers, chief executive at the online car insurance broker.
Meanwhile, many car insurance customers may also be counting the cost of driving with a mobile following a change in the law earlier this year.
On February 27th 2007, the government introduced new penalties for using a mobile handset while behind the wheel.
Offenders will now face a £60 fixed-penalty notice, which is double the previous amount.
