Young drivers have been warned that they face "dreadful consequences" if they get behind the wheel without car insurance.
A large number of young adults between the ages of 18 and 21 regularly drive without car insurance, possibly deterred from purchasing a policy by its price, said Susan Beck, head of communications at the Motor Insurers' Bureau.
However, the expert maintained that a number of innovative car insurance policies are becoming available for younger drivers, designed to lower costs.
Moreover, she reminded young drivers that car insurance should not be regarded as an optional extra, but rather an essential item when they get behind the wheel, not least because it is a legal requirement.
"We have got to get into the psyche of young people and get them to understand that using the road can be a dangerous activity," she remarked.
Some car insurance providers, including Norwich Union, have recently introduced a system whereby drivers only pay for the usage of the vehicle. The price of their premiums is affected by factors such as the time they use their car and frequency of trips.
