Safe women pay less for car insurance

Fri, 06 Jul 2007

Women often drive more safely than men and are less aggressive on the road, translating to lower car insurance premiums, an industry analyst has suggested.

Although female drivers are involved in minor bumps and scrapes when driving, men are more likely to be involved in serious accidents and therefore present a greater risk to car insurance companies, said Andrew Paddick of the Institute of Insurance Brokers.

Mr Paddick, the organisation's director general, said that in most cases a lady motorist will face lower car insurance premiums - provided they do not name a male driver on their policy.

"Obviously if they took up a policy but there were men or young men also driving the car, then it could negate the benefit," he remarked.

"It is important for ladies to get the best discount."

Figures reported by women's car insurance provider Sheila's Wheels found that male drivers between the ages of 17 and 20 are 89 times more likely to be convicted of causing death or bodily harm in a vehicle than a female motorist in the same age bracket.
