Keep car insurance in vehicle, says expert

Mon, 30 Jul 2007

Car owners have been advised by an online insurer comparison site to keep a copy of their car insurance policies in their vehicles.

According to Insurancewide.com, drivers who travel without their car insurance certificates risk a fine or confiscation if stopped by the police.

Chief executive of Insurancewide.com James Harrison commented: "If an insurer is late in reporting a new policy owner's details to the Motor Insurance Database then the unsuspecting driver could mistakenly be deemed uninsured and then fined if stopped by police."

Mr Harrison remarked that he hoped more insurers will offer customers the option of an electronic copy of their policies.

Insurers must notify the Motor Insurance Bureau of 95 per cent of all car insurance changes within 14 days, but this will soon be cut down to just seven days.

In June, Insurancewide.com claimed that too many drivers were buying the wrong kind of car insurance. The company stated that consumers were paying over the odds for third party insurance and it would prove more worthwhile if they took out fully comprehensive cover.
